Broadway Avenue SURGE Project
Spokane, WA
The City of Spokane selected AHBL to implement their first project under the Spokane Urban Runoff Greenway Ecosystem (SURGE) program, funded through the Washington State Department of Ecology FY 2010 Supplemental Water Quality Financial Assistance program and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Located in an urban commercial/residential district near the County Courthouse, the West Broadway Avenue SURGE's goals included reducing stormwater runoff volume to the City's combined sewer system; providing enhanced stormwater treatment with integrated green stormwater infrastructure techniques; improving the streetscape aesthetics and pedestrian experience; and providing an opportunity to evaluate performance and feasibility of implementing throughout the City of Spokane. AHBL's scope included replacing existing concrete sidewalks with pervious concrete, replacing the existing curb, and providing a series of twenty-eight 16' by 5' Storm Gardens which were coordinated around existing mature trees, driveways, and utilities.
